INDUSTRY INSIGHT
Score Yourself: Do you get Three ‘As’?
By Robert Di Scipio

In process manufacturing, we utilize a variety of methods to measure our systems for process understanding. Let these quick questions serve as a report card for your organization, with the goal of getting straight As in three critical areas...

Access
• How long does it take to get pertinent data out of your process development and manufacturing data repositories and into the hands of users charged with process improvement and quality matters? Score an ‘A’ if it takes only seconds or minutes versus weeks or months.

Aggregation
• What types of data can you amass (e.g., continuous, discrete, event, replicate) from disparate sources (e.g., SAP data warehouses, Oracle databases, manufacturing execution systems, data historians)? Give yourself an ‘A’ if you can aggregate all of these with a mouse click.

Analytics
• Do users within your organization have the capability to analyze data using standard, multi-variate and tools for complex processes as well as unique statistical tools for complex processes? If you are using Discoverant to its full potential, score an ‘A.’

If you score less than an ‘A’ on any one of the above items, we hope you will gather insight and user tips from this newsletter that can raise your grade. We invite you to share your own insight and success through the link provided in our Discoverant @ Work column.

AEGIS INTELLIGENCE
Discoverant 3.3 In Progress

Aegis developers are working on enhancements to Discoverant. Version 3.3 will be available in August 2008. Look forward to these new features:

InVision
• Multi-Factor ANOVA will be added to allow users to analyze Factorial experiments.

• Non-Normal Data The InVision Quality Monitor and Statistics modules will be updated to allow analysis of non-normal data.

• Alerts InVision will automatically notify users if processes violate the Western Electric Rules.

• Automated Testing Hierarchy Manager will be able to test returned data automatically against expected values.

• Query Pathways Hierarchy Manager will have even greater control over the queries used to retrieve data in Analysis Groups.

PRIMR
• Dynamic Page Creation Users will have more control over the creation of pages within a PRIMR book. Multiple copies of pages can be created, or pages can be omitted from or added to in-process books.

• Reconciler Page Assignment Individual pages may be assigned to specific reconcilers, allowing targeted reconciler work lists.

DISCOVERANT @ WORK: Power User Tips
Modifying Analysis Groups

There are several things to keep in mind when modifying an Analysis Group once it’s been created. One of the first things that usually happens when you’re doing an investigation is that you select only the parameters you think you’ll need and then quickly find that you need more data.

Adding Data to an Analysis Group (AG):
You can easily add more parameters after you’ve created your AG by selecting the additional parameters in AG Manager or by selecting “Add Hierarchy Parameters” from the Parameter menu item in InVision. This step will launch a window with the hierarchy that was used to create the original AG. Simply highlight all the additional parameters of interest and click . Discoverant will then go out and query the data for those parameters for all of the parameter sets in your AG. Like other changes to your AG, the status of the AG will change to modified after the data is retrieved, and you can save or discard the additional data.

You can also add additional parameter sets to your AG, which must be done in AG Manager. Select the Add Parameter Sets option from the right click menu on the AG or the File menu item, and you will get the same Parameter Set Selection dialogue as when you first created the AG. If the status of the AG is modified, the changes must be saved or discarded before adding additional parameter sets.

Dos and Don’ts:
You can’t remove parameters or parameter sets from within AG Manager. However, both of these actions can be performed using Table View. Another thing you can’t do is change the restrictions on parameters after the AG has been created, since it might impact parameter sets that already belong to the AG. If you want an AG with a different set of parameter sets based on parameter-level restrictions, it is best to create another AG with the “Use as Template...” option in AG Manager. This will use the original AG as a starting point with all of the original parameters selected along with any restrictions, and you can make changes as needed before resubmitting the new AG. Any parameter events in the original AG (e.g., derived parameters and data conditioning) will be reapplied unless you specifically choose not to by unchecking the appropriate update options at the bottom of the Parameter Set Selection dialogue or unchecking the Reapply Parameter Events option in the Creation Options dialogue before submitting the AG.
